About the Inn: Southern Charm

The main house of Argyle Inn Bed and Breakfast was saved from demolition as part of the Seventh Street revitalization project in the original Columbus Georgia Historic District, a National Register Historic Before PhotoDistrict. Built circa 1908 for A.P. Gordy, a Columbus dentist, the house had been neglected and was in much disrepair.

The front porch with upper pavilion could not be salvaged and was removed before the house made its trek in late 1993 several blocks to the corner lot where it now proudly rests. After it was moved, initial renovations made by the owners at that time were to restore the house to its former beauty with a new two-story porch, update the house, and bring the house back from several apartments to its original floor plan.

Susan, a registered nurse, and Bob, a systems software engineer, purchased the home in late 2003 and began the work in late 2004. With Susan acting as the project manager overseeing the project and the couple doing much of the work themselves, it took over 2 years time while living in the house to complete their renovations. The innkeepers’ son also lent his newly acquired skills as an architecture graduate to the project.

All of the changes were made with the idea to make the house more livable for the 21st century while retaining the historic feel that drew the owners to the house when they moved to Columbus, Georgia.

Argyle Inn Bed & BreakfastThe 1860’s home next door which is now the inn’s “cottage” was also moved to its present location but had previously been restored by several owners. The Cottage became available about the time that Susan and Bob decided that their own house would make a comfortable bed and breakfast and it now makes a wonderful addition to the inn with three large suites.

The name “Argyle” was the name of an impressive grand Southern Colonial mansion that was built and owned by a member of Susan’s family. Unfortunately, that spectacular estate, including all its outbuildings, fell victim to encroaching developers and only lives on in memories. The idea of buying a saved structure and further improving it appealed to Susan and Bob after living much of their 32 years of married life in new construction in various areas of the U.S. It is with those memories of a beautiful Southern home that the Weigls have named the newest bed and breakfast inn located in Columbus, Georgia, Argyle Inn Bed & Breakfast.
